“Deciding to spend a full year at Iwate University in Japan was not an easy choice. It was my first long-term experience abroad, and at the beginning, I had my fair share of worries. Now, with half of my exchange period behind me, Ive encountered both challenges and moments of joy, but above all, Ive experienced an overwhelming sense of kindness.

One moment stands out vividly—the very first day I arrived in Japan. My travel companion and I, unfamiliar with the local transport system, nearly missed our train to Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. In desperation, we approached a Japanese man, intending only to ask for directions. To our surprise, he didnt just point the way—he personally guided us through the ticket gates and all the way to the platform before bidding us farewell. Not every encounter in Japan has been this heartwarming, but at that moment, his generosity meant the world to two anxious newcomers.

Over the past few months, I have gradually adapted to Japans academic structure and daily life. The coursework for international students is rigorous but rewarding, and the professors are approachable and supportive. Beyond academics, I have taken part in a variety of activities designed for exchange students, including cultural excursions, disaster preparedness workshops, and even a skiing trip. These experiences have made my time here both enriching and enjoyable.

Studying abroad is a transformative journey. It not only enhances language skills and cultural understanding but also shapes personal growth and future career aspirations. With another semester ahead, I hope to participate in more university events, deepen my engagement with Japanese culture, and further improve my spoken Japanese. Only then will I feel that I have truly made the most of this incredible opportunity.”
