During my exchange period at the University of Szczecin, I have profoundly experienced the differences between European and domestic teaching models. In the classroom, professors place greater emphasis on interactive teaching, encouraging students to express their opinions and even engage in debates. Initially, I was not accustomed to this approach, especially since expressing my thoughts in an academic context entirely in English was not easy. However, as time passed, I gradually learned how to consult more literature, think independently, and participate in classroom discussions with greater confidence.

Course Structure

There is a stronger focus on self-directed learning. Many courses do not have fixed textbooks but instead provide recommended reading materials, requiring students to organize information and prepare for class on their own. Although this method presents certain challenges, it has also enabled me to master more efficient learning techniques.

City Environment

Szczecin is a quiet and beautiful city. Compared to the larger cities in Poland, it has a slower pace of life, which makes it more livable. What impressed me most is the natural environment and historical architecture here. Strolling through the Old Town, one can always feel the rich European cultural atmosphere. Regarding food, Polish cuisine is mainly based on meat, potatoes, and bread. The most distinctive dish is pierogi (Polish dumplings), which come in both sweet and savory varieties. While it was novel to try them at first, I still missed Chinese rice and my hometown dishes after a while.

Cultural Atmosphere

During the exchange, I was fortunate to participate in the school’s International Cultural Festival. This event brought together exchange students from different countries, who introduced their home countries to each other through food, performances, and cultural displays. I, along with other Chinese exchange students, prepared programs with Chinese characteristics and showcased the culture of lacquer fans, which attracted great interest from many international students.

Gains

Through this cultural exchange, I not only made many friends but also gained a deeper appreciation for the unique charm of each countrys culture. The process of cross-cultural communication is truly an opportunity for mutual understanding and collective growth.

My exchange experience in Szczecin has been extremely rewarding. I have become more independent and confident, both academically and in my daily life. Most importantly, I have learned how to adapt to and integrate into a completely unfamiliar environment, and I have gained a better understanding of the differences and commonalities between different cultures.

Advice

For my junior students who are considering coming to Poland for an exchange, I would like to offer the following suggestions:

1. Prepare your language skills in advance, especially spoken English. This will make both classroom participation and daily life much smoother.

2. Try to immerse yourself in the local culture by participating in school activities and interacting with students from different countries.

3. Adapt to the slower pace of life in Poland, manage your time wisely, and maintain an open mindset to fully enjoy this unique experience.

In a nutshell, my exchange life in Szczecin has been an unforgettable journey. It has not only enriched my knowledge but also broadened my understanding of the world.
